Summer School
I got to hang out with my little nieces and nephews last weekend, which made me immensely happy as I am in that middle space between small children and grandchildren.
I realize when you are inundated by the questions and complaints from your own little people, that it can get exhausting, but I hope you can really treasure this fleeting time.
In my own homeschool this week we were in that stage where we finished our engaging year with The Kind Kingdom, but we have a few more days to clock until we finish, so we switched gears a little with these five activities.
Story Game
Everyone gets a piece of paper and 2 minutes to write whatever they want. When the timer rings, we pass the paper and then add 2 minutes of writing to the new paper in front of us. When the paper has gone around the room we end up with a hilarious story. Even young children who are just writing words could add their few words to the story for a funny mix.
Summer Bucket List
We pulled out our school notebooks and wrote 10 goals for the summer, or 10 things we want to learn, or 10 things we want to do. Having my children make the list helps me plan our next studies, and carve out interest led summer learning.
Describe Your Perfect Summer Day
Little ones could describe their day orally, or draw a picture, and school-aged children could be encouraged to use descriptive words to really make the writing sing. I promised to try and make their perfect day come true and was relieved when they didn't include finding a dinosaur or some other impossible task.
Craft Kits
We’ve finished up most of the crafts in The Kind Kingdom and just need a few activities to break up the days. These are a few that we’ve had fun with.
Nature Hikes and Nature Play
We've found a few new spots to explore, and hike, and we've also taken time to just sit and observe and wonder. Children need some quiet time to develop wonder, and the outdoors is especially good for building wonder.
